Q: Is it true that the government is going to stop accepting new applicants for its high risk pools?

A: Yes, it is true.  Although PCIPs were initially authorized through the end of 2013, the Obama Administration announced on February 16, 2013 that effective immediately, enrollment will be halted in the 23 states where the federal government runs the PCIP program.  The remaining 27 states operating their own PCIP program have the option of continuing to enroll people through March 2, 2013.

The 135,000 people around the country already enrolled in a PCIP plan will continue to receive coverage through the end of 2013.

The program has proven more costly than intended. By closing down enrollment now, the government hopes to ensure that enough funds are available to continue to provide coverage to people already enrolled.
