I work for a fast-food franchise and I’ve heard that many of these companies will cut hours for full-time workers so that they don’t have 50 full-time employees. Is this legal?

Q. I work for a fast-food franchise and I’ve heard that many of these companies will cut hours for full-time workers so that they don’t have 50 full-time employees. Is this legal?

A. Yes. But when large franchises such Denny’s and Papa John’s talked about paring back hours for full-time employees have faced huge push-back from customers calling for boycotts. The companies then backed off.

Very few Americans own a company like Papa John’s. Many more work for a franchise. They identify with the employees, not the owners.
