I’ve heard that Obamacare helps women who want to breastfeed buy a breast pump. Others say the law only helps you rent a pump. Who is right?

Q: I’ve heard that the ACA helps women who want to breastfeed buy a breast pump. Others say the law only helps you rent a pump. Who is right?

A:  A breastfeeding counselor is covered under “preventive care” – and for good reason. But under the ACA, insurers are simply required to provide a pump for mothers to use – which can mean either purchasing the pump or renting it. Keep in mind that plans can cover more than is required. Some that want to attract young customers may choose to cover all or part of the cost of a hospital-quality breast pump.
